Okunoshima, known as Rabbit Island, is a small island in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, part of Hiroshima Prefecture. During World War II, it was a secret site for Japan’s chemical weapons production, and its role was erased from official maps to maintain secrecy. The Okunoshima Poison Gas Museum documents this history, detailing the production and effects of poison gas. After the war, the facilities were dismantled, but remnants of the past remain, including abandoned buildings and storage tanks. Today, the island is home to a large population of wild rabbits, which are believed to be either abandoned lab animals or descendants of released domestic rabbits.
